This would not be possible if 154 years ago there had not been a man named Isaac Merritt Singer, the man who revolutionized the global garment industry by inventing the world’s first sewing machine in USA. After his invention, high-quality sewing machines under the brand “Singer” have become widely popular throughout the world, including in Thailand
The beginning of Singer dated back in 1851, when Mr. Isaac Merritt Singer revolutionized the world’s garment industry by inventing the world’s first sewing machine in a small machine shop in Boston, USA within the period of 11 days and borrowed investment money of 40 US dollars. Two years later, the first Singer sewing machine was sold for 100 US dollars, and received a winning prize from the World Fair in Paris, France. After that, Singer devoted all his time to inventing sewing machines until the “Singer” symbol became a globally popular trademark.
“Singer” products became known by the Thai people ever since the reign of King Rama IV, when Anna the Leonowens brought in a Singer sewing machine to give to the Siamese Royal Household. After that females in the Household began to wear garments that were made using the Singer sewing machine. Since then, the “Singer” trademark has been Siamese’ favorite until now.
In 1889, Kiam Hua Heng Company Limited was appointed by the parent company in USA as the distributor of Singer sewing machines in then Siam. Later the company changed its name to Singer Sewing Machine Company Limited and operated as a branch of the parent company in USA.
With a continuous development, in 1957 Singer expanded its business from distributing sewing machines, which already gained popularity, to offering a greater variety of electrical appliances, starting from the introduction of Singer refrigerators into the market, followed by television sets, radios, gas stoves, washing machines, video cassette players, and various kinds of audio equipment, so that Singer’s quality products can cover all the needs of consumers in every household.
To become the leader in distributing electrical appliances under the installment plan system, Singer Sewing Machine Company Limited changed its name toe Singer Thailand Company Limited in 1969, and became listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1984, Since then, Singer’s operation has continued to expand.
